Notice about the GPU

This comes with the advertised NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti but also an Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630. The Nvidia one is better but my laptop was using the intel one as default and my gaming performance suffered. I just disabled the Intel GPU in device manager under display adapters and performance is much better. The laptop looks really nice and the hardware is great for a starter's gaming laptop. You might have to turn down graphic settings in some games since this is more of a budget laptop. The battery life is fine too. I didn’t exactly time how long it lasts but gaming can last for over a hour and doing less intensive tasks can last for a few hours. Another thing to mention is the game performance is not as good when the laptop is not plugged in. Some games have an FPS cap when not plugged in (This can probably be changed in the settings but your laptop will die faster). The only other things are the display is fine but wish the brightness could go a little lower for darker settings and the fan will get loud while playing games. Great Laptop for its price.

Best bang for your buck by far

I've been using a desktop that I put together a few years ago and slowly upgraded over time. However, it's still not fast (2014 build) and it's not portable, so I decided my next incremental upgrade before building a new desktop would be a gaming laptop. LTT pointed me to this laptop and I am not disappointed at all. Now, be aware that you are sacrificing things for this price range. Not a lot of built in storage, 8 gigs of ram, build quality is whatever, I/O is ok, keyboard is ok, trackpad is ok, display is ok.... Yes, there are things you have to trade off for a computer this cheap. However, what you get is a highly capable machine that can run most games you throw at it at good settings and good framerates, and beast all the other tasks you happen to have.Big cons: Screen response time must be really, really slow. It's not a bad display, the color, contrast and brightness are acceptable. But the gray-gray response time is pretty abysmal. Launch any game, look at a light in a dark setting, then move your mouse. You'll see an obvious trail behind it. For me, this isn't a dealbreaker, it's just disappointing and a bit annoying. My desktop displays (which are not expensive, super gamer displays) have much better response times and you would never notice it on them.Honestly, that's the only big con!Small cons:Keyboard is meh. I use a good mechanical keyboard at all times, so almost anything in a laptop will be disappointing. Oh well.Battery life is pretty abysmal, but this isn't really a huge con for me- I'm usually using it plugged in if I need it for hours.Build quality is not great, but I also haven't owned a really nice laptop, so I don't notice it much. It's cheap, so the build quality suffers. That's fine.Trackpad probably isn't the best, but it's acceptable.Only comes with 8gb of ram and small SSD- Not a big deal, since both are easily upgradable. For maybe 80 bucks total mine now has 16gb of ram and another 500gb SSD.Pros:Runs anything I throw at it at much better frames than my desktop, with higher settings. If you have a better desktop... then of course that's not going to be true.Plenty of I/O, only missing Thunderbolt. Oh well.Cooling is adequate, keeps CPU temps under 80 degrees in an air conditioned room and GPU temps well under 65. Not too loud, never had it annoy me.Buy this if you need a cheap laptop that will do everything!

Solid laptop for the budget gamer, read below for more detail.

I have had this laptop for a few weeks, gaming on a daily basis and so far I am very impressed. The laptop is good with multi-tasking as it comes with the Intel I5-8300h quad core CPU. The included 256GB SSD drive performs well and the machine boots super fast.I did follow the advice on multiple reviews for this laptop and undervolt the cpu to -.125. This helps with keeping the machine cool at a minimal loss of performance.I am able to run ultra settings onThe Witcher 3 - Wild Hunt - 30fps.Skyrim Special Edition with texture mods - 60fpsRed Dead Redemption 2 - 25fps on Ultra, 30-40 fps on High with some settings reduced slightly like water quality.Portal 2 - 90+ FPS on ultraFallout 4 - 45+ FPS on ultraI would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone who is looking to purchase a solid gaming laptop.Update - 5 months:I have upgraded the ram to 16GB as animating with Blender and Unity software would eat up the ram on this laptop (link to ram I used is below). I have put this laptop through some abuse with development, gaming and animation.. sometimes all at once utilizing multiple screens. I have purchased some new thermal compound mainly due to my mistrust in the manufacturer compound, but have yet to apply and the laptop is still running like a top. Definitely Recommend as an entry level gaming/animating machine!Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 2400 MHz DDR4 DRAMhttps://amzn.to/38zt74QUpdate - 8 months:I just pulled the laptop apart to clean and apply new arctic silver thermal paste. Procedure went well and the laptop is running much cooler than with the factory paste. Everything else is still functioning flawlessly and I use this laptop daily to game/develop.Arctic MX-4 Thermal Pastehttps://amzn.to/2RkV7nb------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FINAL UPDATE - I have sold this laptop and decided to build my own gaming desktop. Idea list can be found here - https://amzn.to/38wvVjgWhile I have had some fun times with the Acer Nitro 5, there is an issue that has been an annoyance.Thermal Issues - Most of the time using the Nitro 5 was a blast, no issues with heat and perfect performance... especially after the upgrades listed above. However... when gaming, temperatures can go from a cool 50-70C to 90C after a long period. I alleviated this issue by using a program called throttlestop, setting the profiles to disable turbo-boost on the I5 processor once 89C was reached. This did the trick but is not an ideal fix... The issue lies with the way the Nitro 5 cooling system is laid out (see image).Currently there is only one exhaust area for cooling. The issue with this is that the CPU is in the middle, so the GPU heat is being transferred to the CPU via the copper cooling pipes then the CPU heat goes further down the line to the exhaust fan. The ideal layout for this would be for the CPU and GPU to each have their own exhaust fan (similar to an Asus Tuff Laptop) This would ensure that the cooling system is dissipating heat to each respective exhaust fan rather than pulling the GPU heat across the CPU and then out of the case.I have reduced my review to 4 stars due to this issue. I still feel this machine is a great beginner gaming laptop but would recommend theAsus Tuff Laptops - https://amzn.to/36oqXndfor a more serious gamer that is in the same price range.--------------------------------------------------------LINK SECTION--------------------------------------------------------Acer Nitro 5 AN515-42-R5ED (Ryzen 5 with 1TB HDD, no SSD) - https://amzn.to/2GiHOx6UpgradesCrucial Ballistix Sport LT 2400 MHz 16GB DDR4 DRAMhttps://amzn.to/38zt74QAcer Nitro 5 AN515 (I5 with SSD, i5, 8gb ram) - https://amzn.to/38qUz4SUpgradesCrucial Ballistix Sport LT 2400 MHz 16GB DDR4 DRAMhttps://amzn.to/38zt74Q2019 Acer Nitro 5 15.6" FHD Gaming Laptop (12GB Ram + SSD) - https://amzn.to/2TRkOgUUpgradesYou could update the ram to 16GB but this laptop already has 12GB. Pretty good for the price

Works as described make sure you download and install your nvidia drivers! I plan on upgrading the RAM but its not a priority. I have a mid range gaming PC that I use as my main gaming machine and just wanted something I could haul around and run some basic games on without breaking the bank. This thing is great aside from the battery life but whatever its not a deal breaker. I'm super happy with it and hope it lasts!
