Easy To Use, Solid Build, Excellent for Sissors
This is a good solid knife sharpener. This style of sharpener has been around for quite a while now, and this seems to be an attempt to perfect this style/design. This one is a little bigger than some of the older ones, but it is light weight, more comfortable, and probably safer. You have the standard Carbide v-sharpener at a fixed angle in the head. The carbide looks and feels like it's high grade, but a distructive test would be required to actually test the grade. This should really work well for blades that are not regularly maintained. An extra feature with this model is that the carbide blades can be removed and replaced (providing you can find replacements at the time). In addition to inserting replacements, you can reverse them which will allow you to get more usage out of them if you are a heavy user or need to fix a few really bad edges. In addition one might be able to replair them with a diamond stone sharpener for extra long life. This is a very nice feature for the heavy knowledgable user. The best way to keep a knife sharp and in great condition is to never let it get dull... this simple tip can not be over stressed. To help with that, this sharpener also includes second sharpener; a set of Ceramic Rods in a fixed angled V configuration that can be used to put an even finer edge on a blade. The real advantage to having this option is that once your knives are sharp, you can use this sharpener to regularly maintain a very sharp edge without removing much metal at all and thus keep them almost like new. This addtion really allows this style of sharpener to reach closer to a true all-in-one sharpener for regular kitchen knives and the general user.Making this sharpener even more versatile, it includes a scissors/shears sharper. Different than some of Smith's earlier sharpeners with this feature, this one uses a heavy carbide sharpening blade rather than the ceramic one they have used in the past. The carbide blade is substantial at roughly 3x the thickness used for the knife blades, and seems to be of a very high grade. What they kept from the previous design, is the automatic angle adjustment on the sharpening blade. Using newer high tension springs the scissors sharpener automatically adjusts to the exact angle for the shears as they are clamped down on the sharpening blade. With the new carbide shapener this seems to work perfect. On a couple tests with different household utility shears I was immediately impressed, better than anything I had tried like this in the past. The instructions say do a minimum of 5 passes for common household scissors, but after only 3 I stopped they were fantastic and I wonder if they forgot to adjust the instructions for this model. In summary this is an excellent sharpener product of this design, that raises the bar in build and features. This sharpener can be used by anyone very easily to keep household knives and scissors sharp. The included instructions are minimal, but sufficient. I waited until it was $10 with free shipping, and at this price it's very high value.Stay Sharp!

Pleased with both scissor and knife sharpening performance.
I had modest expectations as I typically sharpen my woodworking tools, and my knives, with diamond stones - and this is a LOT cheaper option. But I didn't like sharpening scissors, so I gave this a shot.To date, it has worked well in bringing some old "dull as can be" scissors back to life, and also worked well on a few pair that were already in pretty good shape. As for the knife sharpening feature, it does reasonably well unless you must have or just want the absolute highest quality edge. The results have been far more than adequate for a pocket knife, and I also sharpened a few dull kitchen knives as well. Some knives required only a few swipes on the fine edge, but it also worked well on others that required a bit of work on the coarse edge first. It is easy to use and can work for both left and right handed scissors. Just remember to use the correct side depending on the orientation of your scissors (it is clearly marked, I just didn't pay attention the first swipe). While it is all plastic, the sharpener feels sturdy. The black rubber gives you the right amount of grip, and while I am no hiker, I think the plastic handle/clip mechanism combined with the tacky black rubber would keep it where you intended, even on the outside of your pack or if clipped to other gear.My only complaint (minor) is that it feels a little awkward when you sharpen scissors. Assuming you hold the scissors in your right hand as would be expected for those who are right handed, you have to hold the sharpener in your left, which means you are holding the "leg" with the sharpening mechanism when in use. It feels as if it would have been perfect if the left and right handed scissors sharpener configuration were reversed. That said it just took a few swipes to get comfortable - and not many more to finish the job.I am pleased with the purchase and my wife likes it as well. She was a little scared to sharpen scissors or knives, but feels safe using this tool. We would recommend it to others who do not need a surgical quality edge. I suspect I will be using it more often than not for all of our scissors, and almost all of our knives.

Excellent product
This is superb. I have a fist full of other types of sharpeners which don't work well or didn't work for long. I have expensive knives which had become badly dull. This cured my lack of knife sharpening tallent! I cut myself on a super sharp paring knife today!

Poorly manufactured, bit of a letdown
It looks like it should work well. Great design and great materials. However, the scissor sharpening rods mounted in the handle rattle loosely and move a bit during sharpening. Poor manufacturing let me down with this one. Great company overall, but a bit of a miss on this particular model.
