New lease of life for metal drill bits

The media could not be loaded. Excellent piece of kit. I had replaced a few bits that were blunt but now I have seen the light! The bits don’t need replaced, they need sharpened! And this tool does a great job of sharpening them! Video is not great for seeing the improvement but it works well. Cut through steel like butter afterwards, I was quite impressed. I sharpened around 10 drill bits from 3mm up to 12.5mm diameter. I could not fit smaller bits in the sharpener because they are too short to hold in the sharpeners “turret”. Important to read the instructions but it is straightforward once you know how. I bought a spare grinding wheel but the original still looks like new after the first 10 bits. Highly recommended to bring your bits back to life.

With care, it can provide reasonably good results

This drill sharpener is probably best suited to those who have at least some experience of, and understanding, of hand-sharpening drill bits on a wheel, freehand. With care setting it up, this tool takes away some of the judgement of angles and can provide a clean result. - I will say that without care and appreciation of what's going on, it potentially won't do those things.A slightly weak point is probably the "setting" tool (the little red flip-down piece) which can sometimes provide incorrect angles even with delicate finger work (instructions promote checking this prior to grinding). I find that a proportion of the time, however carefully I use the setter, the drill bit needs to be manually re-set in depth or rotation to make this work well.

It works, but is it worth the effort when new bits are so cheap?

Instructions are hard to follow, but are not actually misleading. I have only used for HSS drillls so far, and it has worked well enough on bits larger than 4mm. Rather disappointing to find it doesn't sharpen 135 degree bits such as my cobalt ones.Might be worthwhile getting this item if you have acquired a load of blunt drill bits already. But the item is very lightly built and the key bearings are plastic and have developed quite a bit of play which spoils the accuracy of the grinding angle. But is it really worth the effort? Bits in the well known DIY stores are terribly overpriced, but you can buy a set of 10 x TiN coated bits over the range 1.5 to 6 mm for around £30 from various trade suppliers such as MachineMart and Screwfix which should last for ages. And in my experience, these are good bits.

Good tool for the price

I had read most of the reviews for this item before buying it. Got it unpacked it and read the instructions a few times. First drills I tried were masonry, which are quite easy to do. Flat bits also are quite straight forward. I read the guide again before starting on hss bits, still managed to make a hash of it with setting up, reread guide again. This time followed to the letter and lo, a sharp bit. I did a few more and found I had a about 7 out of 10 OK. I bought a drill bit guide and then did the crap kinds again and I have 100% of bits sharp. Trick is reading guide correctly, plus being slow and light with the wheel, I could see how some would wear out the wheel in a oner or wear a groove in it. I think it is a pretty good tool for the price, it deffo works and loads of good quality but blunt bits which lurked about my shed are all gathered together and as sharp as they can be.

This is the drill sharpener to buy!

Needed to drill some holes in 3mm steel and discovered that my lovely set of 20 HSS cobalt coated drills were all blunt. Tried to use the bench grinder with only limited sucsess. Next ordered a drill sharpener with 20 vertical holes for each size of drill. Made the right noise and drill tips looked shiny but drills still pretty blunt.Ordered this British designed drill sharpener and teamed it up with an old drill with a poor keyless chuck. Firstly sharpened all 30 HSS drills which performed like new. Then sharpened some masonary drills without problem - all now sharp. The gadget has paid for itself already! Great piece of kit!

easy to set up and easy to use

I found this to be easy to set up and easy to use. Others have stated there are a lot of bits and it is easy to loose some parts as they are many and small. I on the other hand found there are only five parts to the whole thing and once it is set up there are only two parts not used at all times you have a spare barrel for larger or smaller drill bits and a fitting for wood drill bits and these are now in a jar marked drill sharpener. There are no clear and detailed instructions but if you look at the pictures and diagrams you can not go wrong. So if you have dull or blunt drill bits laying around then get this and give the old drill bits a new lease of life.Did you know that in Tennessee USA...It's illegal for frogs to croak after 11 PM

Great little gadget

A little bit of a hassle to set your drills up for sharpening but one done this gadget really does a great job. I like the way you can flip it over and you have two grinding wheels one course and one fine for sharpening broken screw drivers, chisels, knives etc etc. I lives in my tool box and has been used on many occasions and will hopefully continue to do so for some time as it seems to be quite robust and well put together. I also bought two spare wheels, but the original one's seem to be lasting some time but for the price it really doesn't matter. A great little add on for your toolbox and money well spent.

General purpose grinding only

This inexpensive grinding wheel is a useful general purpose grinder. The jig for aligning and holding your drill bit in the correct position and orientation is very disappointing. The collet that grips the drill bits being plastic, simply melts as heat is generated through the grinding process. Once that happens, it’s impossible to keep the drill bits properly aligned in the collet. If accurate drill bit sharpening is what you need, I wouldn’t recommend this item based on my experience.
